What I learned from this book: You can not trust your family, you never know what they are thinking.
Description of the book: You never know what’s happening on the other side of the wall. Your neighbour told you that she didn’t want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn’t stand her crying. Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You’ll have the baby monitor and you’ll take it in turns to go back every half-hour. Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She’s gone. You’ve never had to call the police before. But now they’re in your home, and who knows what they’ll find there. What would you be capable of, when pushed past your limit?
How this book made me feel: This book was in my local supermarket’s book chart forever, so I thought that it is going to be an amazing read, but after finishing it, I really feel like I wasted my time on this book.
This book is about a couple, whose daughter gets kidnapped, and the whole book is about trying to figure out who took the baby. The characters of this book were not very interesting to me, especially Marco. I appreciate that author tried to put some twist on Anne’s character with unexpected information. The most of the book was told through Anne’s, Marco’s and investigating detective’s perspectives, the most interesting to me was the detective’s parts. It had some action going on, rest of it was telling the same thing over and over again.
I did not feel any suspense in this thriller, all the best parts were given away in the middle of the book which made the rest of it really dragging. The author tried to put some twists and turns but it was not enough for me. One thing I don’t like in the books I read is recaps, I read it, I know what was uncovered. It has got a little more interesting towards the end of the book, but the whole outcome was put in my head by the author already, so it was not surprising.
The chapters of this book were short and quick to read, but writing style for me was very repetitive. The ending of the book concluded the book quite well, but was it necessary? So to conclude, I tried my best to like this book, kept reading in hope for a complete turnover, but it didn’t happen so, unfortunately, this book wasn’t for me. However, this book has a lot of fans and great rating on Goodreads so you might be one of the people who will like it, to find that out, give this book a try and let us know what were your thoughts 🙂
About the Author: Shari Lapena worked as a lawyer and as an English teacher before writing fiction. Her debut thriller, The Couple Next Door was a global bestseller.
