What I learned from this book: A ton of not funny jokes…
Description of the book: I’m Elsa, and that’s one of my jokes (I tell LOTS of jokes and I’m going to be a big star one day). I do my best to cheer my family up – but no one seems to laugh much any more. Not since we lost our lovely house and had to move into a bed and breakfast hotel . . .
How this book made me feel: Ohh this book left me angry on so many levels… but unfortunately it has a very realistic situation.
The protagonist in this novel is Elsa, after her stepdad loses his job, they end up in bed and breakfast, waiting for Social Housing to arrange them a flat. This book really made me angry, especially with Elsa’s mother and stepdad. The mother is good for nothing, and the stepdad is absolutely useless but very good at going to betting shops, smacking Elsa, visiting pubs, and kicking a fuss with “entitlements”. I was sad for Elsa, who was left to raise her sister and brother. 😦
The narrative of this book is frustrating, but I liked the way the author was trying to keep up the hope and Elsa’s positive attitude. The topics discussed in this book are abusive stepfather, hyperactive children, school, homelessness, poverty, friendships, dreams and many more.
The setting of this book is pretty grim, a family in a crappy B&B, but the life bubbling behind each door was very interesting for me. The chapters are quite long, but the illustrations break up the monotony, and the pages just flew by. The ending of the book rounded the story nicely and I was quite satisfied with the outcome.
So, to conclude, this book really annoyed me, but I liked Elsa and her life story. This book highlights a lot of dirt that is going on in society. To find out more, you would have to read this book, one thing I can promise, a ton of jokes, that are not funny at all. 😀 😀 😀
Thank you for your time! ❤
