What I learned from this book: That things happen for a reason.

Description of the book: On the day that Betty meets Guy, her life is changed forever. She never thought she’d see him again, but a few months later, realizes she has something of his that needs returning…

So, she writes him a letter. It’s the perfect solution for Betty – it means she doesn’t need to tell Guy about what really happened that day, and the secret she’s been hiding.

For Guy, Betty’s letter arrives at his repair shop at the perfect time. His whole world has come crashing down around him and for the first time in a long time, he starts to feel hopeful.

But can you really begin to fall in love with someone you’ve only met once…?

How this book made me feel: Dear Reader, I have no idea why I agreed to read this book. I did not read the author’s previous books, but something attracted me to this book, and I can not explain what it was…

Maybe it was our protagonists? Betty and Guy (Yes, it is his name 😀 ) are experiencing a lot of emotional pain, and grief, and have their lives in shambles… After an accident, Betty is suffering from severe PTSD, self-loathing and a need to be valid. She works very hard toward her dream, and I was silently supporting her all the way. Guy just lost the people he loved the most and he was suffering a lot. He was betrayed by people he cared about, and Betty’s presence in his life kind of saved him. All the characters in the book are very realistic and intriguing personalities. I really liked them all, because they showed that some people, even though they are unpleasant, come into your life to teach you something, and that is what life is all about.

Or perhaps it was the narrative? This plot is full of emotions and a variety of topics were touched on or discussed. Such as loss of parents and other loved ones, guilt, self-loathing, loneliness, forgiveness, working to achieve your goals and dreams, family relationships, self-doubt, trust and relationships, children and plenty more. I was never bored while reading this book, there are so many things going on, and I wanted to see what Betty and Guy are going to do.

Or maybe it was the setting and the writing style? I love reading books set in small British towns and villages, I am a Londoner, so the calmness and the sense of community are soothing to me. The author lives in Wales, and I really liked that she shared her love for the country with the reader. The writing style is very enjoyable and creative, filled with substance rather than just a romantic story. The chapters have medium length, but the chapter composition and dual perspectives made this novel a true joy to read. I really loved the ending of this book, it rounded this story perfectly.

So, to conclude, one thing for sure, I have no regrets after reading this book. The characters are complex, inspiring and educational, and the plot always had me hooked and entertained. I strongly recommend this book if you are looking for a romantic story that is not afraid of difficult topics and leaves you thinking. It has inspired me, and I hope it will inspire you as well. 🙂
