What I learned from this book: It is OK to be different.

Description of the book: Max has spent years thinking he is cursed, because whenever he touches anything electrical it explodes. But then he is sent to Yowling and discovers he is a Spellstopper, someone with the rare ability to drain dangerous build-ups of magic and fix misbehaving enchanted items.

When Max’s Grandad is kidnapped by the cruel Keeper of the malfunctioning magical castle that floats in the bay, only Max’s gift can save him. Together with his new friend Kit, Max throws himself into an adventure filled with villainous owls, psychic ice cream and man-eating goldfish. But can he really pull off the biggest spellstop ever?

How this book made me feel: Magic and the adventures in the imaginary world? Yes, please! I was seduced by the cover, to be honest, it looks super cool. 🙂

The protagonists in this book are Max and Kit. Max has the power to break electric devices, when his mom sends him to live with granddad Bram, he meets his assistant Kit. Bram fixes magical items and Kit fixes non-magical ones. Soon Max finds out that he is not cursed, but carries a very rare gift, he can fix magic items as well as remove any magic in them. Max and Kit become good friends and they start exploring the beautiful village of Yowling, where all the locals are very peculiar. I loved following Max and Kit on their adventures, both of them are very smart and full of surprises.

The plot of the book started a little bit slow, but when Max goes to Yowling, the narrative gets very absorbing because everything is new to Max and I loved watching him discover everything for the first time. I liked the adventures and the unexpected discoveries throughout the book. The topics discussed in this book were guilt, friendships, determination in learning new things, being different, helping the ones in need, bullying and many more.

I absolutely loved the setting of this book. The village reminded me of Clovelly in Devon minus the castle, I really would like to know which place inspired the author because it sounds amazing! The writing style is very creative and beautiful. The author has a great eye for detail and I felt like I’m alongside the characters on their adventures. The chapters are pretty short and the pages just flew by for me. There are no illustrations in this book, and I would’ve loved some, it makes the reading experience even more enjoyable. 😦 I really liked the ending of the book, I think it rounded up this story very well.

So, to conclude, this book is set in a stunning location, the characters are absorbing and fun and the plot is full of surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed their adventure and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. I hope you will give this debut a go and will like it as much as I did. 😉
Thank you for your time ❤
